- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 lemon, juiced
- Pita bread
- Cucumber, sliced
- Tomatoes, sliced
- Lettuce leaves
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned.
- Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in chopped red onion, tomato, parsley, oregano, cumin, and cinnamon. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
- In a small bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt and lemon juice.
- To assemble gyros, warm pita bread. Fill each pita with a generous amount of the beef mixture.
- Top with sliced cucumber, tomatoes, and lettuce leaves. Drizzle with additional lemon juice or Greek yogurt, if desired.
Notes
- For a more authentic flavor, use lamb instead of beef.
- Pre-cooked gyro meat can be used to reduce cooking time.
- Store leftover gyro meat in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Use a food processor to finely chop the red onion for a smoother texture.
- For a spicier gyro, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the beef mixture.
